Raphael Koebraam

I'm fascinated by Apple platform development, software engineering, and entrepreneurship. I'm always thinking of ways to change people's lives, pushing myself to overcome barriers and working to create meaningful projects through technology. I have more than 13 years of experience coding mainly for Apple platforms, with an eye for automation, developer experience, and CI/CD. I focus on writing clean, testable code and invest time in keeping up to date, learning new technologies, and constantly looking to improve the way I write code.

Experience

Senior Software Engineer (iOS & iPadOS) @ Threema AG Jul 2025 - present

Working on the Threema iOS and iPadOS apps, an end-to-end encrypted messenger used by millions of users and thousands of organizations. Contributing across the full codebase to new features, performance, and reliability, with a focus on architecture, scalability, test coverage, and CI/CD.

Senior Software Engineer (Apple platforms) @ UniBe Feb 2025 - Jun 2025

Developed and enhanced the Valuatic Touch and Measured Examinator iPadOS apps for the Institute for Medical Learning, alongside internal apps for iOS and macOS. Responsibilities included architecture design, ensuring robust and maintainable codebases, implementing continuous integration and delivery, and collaborating closely with stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions tailored to medical education and internal operations.

Instructor @ Essential Developer Feb 2022 - Jun 2025

Essential Developer builds and supports a community of professional iOS developers who believe in high standards, excellence, and delivering great apps.

After graduating from the iOS Lead Essentials program I joined the team as an instructor.

My role was to help students of the program become better developers by reviewing challenges, sharing my knowledge, and answering questions in the community.

Founder & Software Engineer @ Zion Creations Jan 2022 - Jun 2025

Independent software consultancy for Apple platforms and backend systems. I helped teams ship reliable iOS, iPadOS, and macOS products through architecture reviews, test-driven development, and CI/CD, and built backend services and APIs in Go, TypeScript, and Rust. Engagements ranged from hands-on development to mentoring and training engineering teams.

Senior Software Engineer (Apple platforms) @ WeTransfer Feb 2022 - Dec 2024

As a key contributor, I developed new features, maintained and improved the app, managed technical debt, deployed and monitored the WeTransfer app across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, and mentored other engineers.

Senior iOS Developer @ Siilo Nov 2016 - Feb 2022

Siilo is a secure, compliant medical messenger that helps medical professionals collaborate on difficult cases, trusted by over 350,000 professionals.

I worked across the entire codebase, building new features, handling tech debt, and deploying the app.

Co-founder & iOS Developer @ Ludwig Project Jun 2014 - Dec 2017

Featured in the WWDC 2015 Keynote video The App Effect (at 1h17min). Ludwig was an iOS accessibility project that introduced the world of music to hearing-impaired people: the app worked as a piano with colors and vibrations, using a wristband as external hardware, so users could see and feel the music being played.

iOS Developer @ OneTune.fm Aug 2014 - Dec 2016

Developed the iOS app for OneTune.fm, a free, open music streaming platform, working remotely with the design and back-end teams.

iOS Developer @ Bikoo Sep 2015 - Sep 2016

Developed and shipped the iOS app for Bikoo, a platform connecting drivers and couriers with people who needed packages and documents transported from A to B. Remote role, working mostly with MapKit, Google Maps, and the company's private API.

iOS Developer @ Cetus Jul 2013 - Mar 2016

Remote iOS developer building and shipping apps for the company's clients, including B2B and communication solutions; also built the apps' Java back-end.

iOS Developer @ Apple Developer Academy Sep 2013 - Dec 2014

First edition of the Apple Developer Academy, a program based on Challenge Based Learning (CBL) that encourages students to solve real-world problems with technology in their homes, schools, and communities.

Apps developed during the program:

Projects

Creator & Developer @ Walking Buddy

Step-goal app for iPhone and Apple Watch, free on the App Store with a Pro subscription. Walking Buddy reads steps from Apple Health, learns your usual pace from the past four weeks, and sends reminders that say how many steps to take right now to stay on pace, quiet once the goal is done. It ships with Home and Lock Screen widgets, a Live Activity, an Apple Watch app with complications, streaks that tolerate rest days, and a year of history with trends and records. No account, no ads, no analytics; nothing leaves the device. Localized in seven languages, with VoiceOver and Dynamic Type throughout. Designed, built, and shipped solo in Swift and SwiftUI as a modular Tuist workspace on HealthKit, WidgetKit, ActivityKit, StoreKit, and watchOS.

Creator & Maintainer @ Mirage

Open-source command-line tool for Apple simulators, built in Swift on top of xcrun simctl. Mirage lets you address simulators by name instead of UDID, picks sensible defaults (booted device, newest runtime), and adds what simctl lacks: a safe cleanup with a dry run, disk-usage reporting, a doctor command, JSON output for scripting, and shell completions. Distributed via Homebrew and mise as a single universal binary, with CI-friendly behavior (honest exit codes, explicit confirmation for destructive commands, isolated device sets).
